: Hey MLBians... wow been so long since I came here le.. really had a tough time with my FYP but now it's sorta over :) just left with some smaller details and preparation for grad show in June. Hope everyone's doing fine here.
I guess nowadays, facebook is the way to go (in fact i joined kinda late) but well, just in case mlbians didn't know, the 3 of us have accounts there :)

So.. now tat school's over, "wat's next"? Expand this post to find out :)

i guess that's the big question. Well, for now, I'm gonna back Nic up at Echo Music China Town as his side-kick! Gonna be teaching keyboard classes there from now on :D just a little inside info, i am working on the beatboxing syllabus too so that I can start a vocal percussion course at echo too. :p

So to summarize...
Nic and Wei Qi teaching at Echo music chinatown.
Sam teaching drums at pomo and creative kids lessons too.
MLB is down due to hardware issues (white pony is constantly acting up, and now my laptop can't enter windows due to hardware failure, called the repair center up but they say need to change whole motherboard for a ridiculous price...)

Each pick has a diff sound.. due to the material density and hardness or thickness..

then what?

different girls for diff days? cannot laa!!!! wuahaha...

This pick is interesting because of the workmanship and hence sound produced.. my typical tortex black and hard ones are still used.. in gigs when i'm afraid to lose my 15 dolla pick keke.. or in the studio when i want a thinner sound..

and for acoustic strumming use thin ones coz u want the acoustic guitar sound thin and crisp.. all about usage ba..

tone is 30% of everything else.. it makes up the speaking voice of the medium.. the guitar tone in this case..

hence each has its use.. fingers. picks.. coins.. tongue (like crazy jimmi hendrix).. finger nails..

Its just how you wanna speak using the guitar.

I'm no pro.. but understanding an instrument how it works and what works best in a situation makes u an understanding player..

know the battle ground before you go into war! haha..

Plexu glass like material - its crazy.. but i have experienced th difference.. i know it exists :)

Some of my student came back with entire packs of picks.. all diff hardness and material just for their strumming lesson?!!! crazy... i respect..

experimenting and learning along the way is always fun!! so grab a pack of picks now! jokes..

Thailand too even got less guit shops than SG!! so must appreciate liaoz keke..

Tried Malaysia.. crazy prices and lil shops too.. hard to find..

Yep.. they produce one series with a buffed surface.. another matt.

The matt surface ones are for a "rougher" sound.. grinds the strings for abit more "Bite"..

I've tried all.. couldn't bear to buy them all.. expensive la to collect!! haha.. hence bought 2 which suited my usage.. as friend of mine imports guits and VPicks.. so I had lovely opportunities to try ALL of them! Need more money to rob him of one of his guits! ARgh!!!!

Below are the picks I have for recording and playing (not the look gd collection aye.. workhorses to do my art).. Hope this is helpful to those that play or wanna understand more about guits and tone in relation to the pick or fingers! And pls dont forsake the fingers and chop them off saying you dont need them.. coz fingers are the priceless picks!!!!!!!

In my pick keychain always 3 picks minimum.

1 V pick Diamond
1 Acoustic pick
1 tortex small hard pick

So i got 3 women in my pocket? jokes la! haha

suprisingly these picks improve technique..

Thick picks phycologically affect us.. we no need grab so tight.. hence loosen the right hand grip..

when practice i ALWAYS use the V Pick Diamond.. when i change back to a normal one or the thinner Vpick.. more relaxed :)

About the grip thing they say on the web? eh.. not really la.. haha.. dunno..

Oh my goodness. shouldnt be promoting a product here. But gosh. ITZ GREAT. been 8 mth since the change from a traditional pick to a Vpick.. if i lose a v pick i sure will get it replaced.. but the traditional (good) pick cant be eradicated. Most neutral and has proven it's versatility over the years..

try strumming on a Vpick.. to me erhem.. its bad....

try a Vpick on individual notes of heavy palm muting..

Little people know that a pick can alter your entire sound.. from 20% - 60%

This kinda a love hate relationship for me.. each pick cost ard 5 - 15 sgd .. got 2 diff ones in my artillery.. The fender's added to my armoury now operationally ready!! ORD! haha.. Love the thickness of sound on this thing (due thickness 3 50cent coins for one of the models).. hate because of the "clicking" sound caused by thick picks' meterial fiberglassish kinda resin.

Oh well.. guess I'm talking too much music..

In pop industry must talk more on how interesting my life is.. Being in the media light etc etc.. OOPS.

our style of music, i would say is a bit towards more experimental. Not towards experimental music like "glitch & noise".. but experimental in a sense not leaning towards the the norm of "C Am F G".. trying to mesh Bits and pieces of Diff genres together.

Eg... Chi Xia Yu Zhou's verse feel was from " The Killers". Chorus guitars were influenced by Senses fail.

Yin Shi Nan Nu verse was an empty indie kinda feeling, prechorus changed key, chorus change key again, Chorus sounding abit Radio head BUT WITH STRINGS, and an empty pocket for the snare before the second half of the chorus (which is outa the norm in pop).

Leng wan can you have wei qi's classical interlude solo.. the old school last chorus. Intro soundscaping like movie soundtrack?

These are just examples.. the whole album in a sense were inspired musically by the greats and unnoticed of diff genre.

What genre are we?

Honestly.. i duno..

If wanna classify.. i guess...

a mixture of poppish tunes.. rock.. ballad.. synth..

i duno manz.. haha..

just music i guess

Congratulations to the whole MLB family because we did it together! It was a super joint effort once again between MLBians and MLB and all supporters and friends! wow.. been buried so deep in my FYP that I hardly have the time to come here.. or get outta school(6 days a week in school) that is.. anyways. came here and read nic's post. must say that when i read a post like this, I get emotional. some things u really wanna shout out to the world, and tell everyone. that day i was just thinking, maybe i should write a book, about a local band and what they go thru in order to make music, and removing the myths in people's minds about the industry. Today my best friend from sec school called me up to ask if i was joining a class gathering(of course can't go...FYP...). But then he said something, that caught me off guard, and the thing hit me real hard. "You must be earning man! Been seeing you on TV and your band's got tat 3rd album etc..." wow... i wanted to just roll over and die at that moment.. wanna see my bank account figures? not many figures to begin with... sorry ya.. today emo emo.. cos nic's post la.. oei bro, ur post infectious man... :p

Take care all of u mlbians! I guess we gotta meet up for mlb gathering some how.. i dunno.. but gotta. nitey.

Thanks all for buying our album.. anyway to clear up..

more album sales not really equals more income for the band.. it gives the band a better portfolio for future ventures..
the bulk of money goes back to investors who threw in loads of cash for
the production.. they have to take back somewhere..

It took lots of faith.. and lots of money thrown in.. we're appreciative of that ever so much..

We're hoping for good sales to assure people that music is a possible investment in singapore..

To
sum up.. artistes are always struggling if we're SG based. WE ARE. It's
due to the the typical mindset that foreign products are better. Which
may be true. WHY???

We
are not full time PAID artistes. To set the record straight.. we're
part time.. NOT TRAINED. NOT GROOMED.. NOT FINANCIALLY ASSISTED.
Learning through experience and elder's (of the trade's) guidance..
Honing our skills as we go along.. throwing in our every cent into
passion.

Sidetrack.. example : my Mac white was a "donation" by my dad. I couldn't afford the purchase personally.

I've
learnt much through this journey. How long more can passion last me?
Checking ATMs for my next Giro pay? Hoping my cheques goes through to
last me the next mth?

It's
an irony, my smile on the stage and how it simmers away when off
stage.. Only when the music is on, the smile unknowingly appears again.

I feel guilty for being me.

I feel grateful that so many people are behind us.

The greatest joy that SS show night was the screams so loudly heard on TV...

The
greatest joy for me is to bring joy on stage. I hope to be able to
continue to do so.. to sing if i may.. to make music if i may.. to
inspire if I may..

And God help me survive and keep myself afloat and sane while doing so..

Not letting myself down, being who I am, but a better me to come.

If I have to be an ARTISTE to be an ARTIST. I will have to give it a go.

This lil boy just wants to make music and shake his bon bon on stage *sigh*.

Can't get myself to "ai mu xu rong".

Oh well. The TRUTH is not necessarily beautiful at first glance.. But it's the imperfection that makes it real..

wow, today felt like a gathering instead.. cos so many mlbians turned up. thanks to all who came! and also not forgetting yuan ping for helping despite her fyp. it really touched the 3 of us, and we're really thankful for having supporters like you all. thank you all for the presents(we know that most of u are students so dun need presents), but the greatest present is your support, so we're more than happy le. Take care u all, and thank you all for helping with the voting(long hu bang) too!

quite a number of u asked about the mac, and what we are going to do about the issue. We understand your concern and good intentions, but we will not want any of you or our friends and family to go to the expense of aiding us in this area, because it is not dealing with the root of the problem. It is the responsibility of our band and band management to handle such technical issues. For the past 3 years, the equipment of the band has been built upon our shows/savings and our self-studying(going online to read up etc.) and in order for the band to continue striving to greater heights, the issue has to be solved, and not covered up.

IT's almost over.. the festive season.. been a tough half a yr.. almost time for the rest period afetr all the rushing up and down!

Last year album productions started feb... will there be a next one coming up? Well honestly.. I don't know.. All we know we have got the greatest supporters here with us.. though few.. but enough to keep our fire burning :)

I feel the Chinese commercial market isn't open to "Indie" sounding tracks yet..but we'll see how it goes..

Never stop fighting for the tough dream of making music as a living..
